What is it?

Chiropractic is hands-on (instruments are also sometimes used) manipulation of the spine, extremity joints and surrounding tissue to reduce irregular pressure on nerve roots and improve musculoskeletal alignment and function.

Who does it?

People with acute or chronic neck or back pain or stiffness who prefer a non-invasive (no drugs or surgery) approach may seek treatment from a doctor of chiropractic. There are also those who believe (both practitioners and patients) that correct spinal alignment and function is critical to the body's optimal capacity for self-healing for a number of conditions.

What to look for in a practitioner?

  • A referral relationship with a primary care physician (M.D.)
  • A reputation for treating conditions and ending treatment when symptoms cease
  • Practice that integrates a variety of modalities including massage and exercises
  • Client references
  • A good fit regarding style, communication and professionalism
