Yoga & Pilates
What is it?
Yoga, as it's more popularly thought of in the west, refers to a series of held poses or "asanas." Physical, psychological and spiritual benefits include improved strength, flexibility, and reduction of stress and stress-related conditions, as well as a general sense of balance and peacefulness.
Pilates is a series of exercises using either a floor mat or a special apparatus (reformer is the most popular) concentrating on core muscle (between the base of the ribs and the tops of the thighs) strength and endurance, improved dynamic stability, coordination posture and range of motion.
Who does it?
Yoga has a number of styles and levels from beginning to very advanced difficulty. Those who practice yoga may be looking to improve focus, release tension, to improve a number of physical capacities or simply to have an integrated mind/body/spirit wellness ritual.
Pilates students report better balance, posture, coordination, range of motion and improved biomechanics in all physical (functional, recreational, athletic) activities.
